The purpose of the 58-meter tall building was to provide logistics, distribution and storage space for their food delivery chain — including a ripening hall for all the bananas that were dispatched from there to all corners of Switzerland.

Classified as a listed monument in 2012 due to its industrial historical importance, parts of the premises were left empty after an internal reorganisation and have since then been reconverted for cultural activities.Im Jahr 1959 kaufte die Genossenschaft Migros, der grösste Lebensmitteleinzelhändler der Schweiz, etwa 50'000 m2 Land, auf dem nur zwei Jahre später eines der ersten Hochhäuser der Schweiz stand, das Herdern Hochhaus.

Der Zweck des 58 Meter hohen Gebäudes war, Logistik, Vertrieb und Lager für ihre Lieferkette bereitzustellen – einschliesslich einer Reifehalle für Bananen, die von dort aus in alle Ecken der Schweiz transportiert wurden.

Aufgrund seiner historischen industriellen Bedeutung, wurde das Gebäude im Jahr 2012 unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. En raison de son importance industrielle historique, le bâtiment a été classé monument protégé en 2012. Grazie alla sua importanza storica, nel 2012 l’edificio è inserito nella lista dei siti appartenenti al Patrimonio di umanità – il stesso anno in cui, dopo una riorganizzazione interna, parti dell’impianto sono stati vacati, e messi a disposizioni per uso temporaneo.
